The Saga of Squish

Squish was developed by John Derevlany and David Michel from the best selling comic series by Matthew and Jennfer Holms. The show premiered in February 2020, and was almost immediately pulled off the air in March 2020. Why?

Well, it’s a show about a group of microscopic organisms in middle school — amoeba, paramecium, bacteria, and… a virus named Vinny… who shared an unmistakable similarity to a certain coronavirus which reached pandemic levels about a week after the show premiered.

Wow. Talk about bad timing.

Vinny only appeared in 4 of the 52 episodes. And most of the scripts had been been written years earlier (starting in 2016). But apparently none of the networks had much of an appetite for ANY kind of microscopic germs or bacteria on their platforms during the early weeks of a raging pandemic.

Luckily, COVID has subsided, and Squish has slowly started to reappear on networks around the world. It currently airs on the POP Channel in the UK (click here), among other broadcasters.

LEGO Legends of Chima

This show originally aired on Cartoon Network in the U.S., and about 40 other channels around the globe from 2013-2015.  Full episodes are now available online, including the two-part “pilot episode” on the LEGO youtube site (part one is at right).

John Derevlany wrote the pilot, the three bibles (one for each season), and all 43 episodes, as well as the 4D theme park movie.

And speaking of Chima…

This is a short animated film I made in January 2011 when applying to work on the LEGO project that would eventually become Legends of Chima. “Derevlany Wants to Work for Lego” was the actual title I used when I sent it out to my prospective employers. I was trying to get their attention (obviously). And it worked!

For real.

Snot Bubble Boy

In addition to doing larger budget TV productions, John Derevlany also does the occasional low-budget independent film.  This is a flash animated short film based on Derevlany’s son Ian.  It showed at several film festivals in 2011, and got some pretty decent reviews.  Click the link for more info on Snot Bubble Boy.

This was a one-person-production, written, directed, compoosed, and animated by John Derevlany.

Crackers the Corporate Crime Fighting Chicken

This was a segment from a show called TV Nation, that aired on Fox and NBC.  The show aired from 1994-1995, and was nominated twice for an Emmy (winning once).

John Derevlany wrote and performed the “Crackers” segment, among others.  That suit was really hot and uncomfortable.

Leftovers

This was an early, live-action, short film, shot in 16 mm that won awards at nearly a dozen film festivals.  For more info, see the website.

It was written, directed, produced, scored and edited by John Derevlany

Uke Til U Puke

Speed-metal ukulele pioneers Uke Til U Puke appearing on Fox News New York in the 1990s.  To learn more about Uke Til U puke, go to uketilupuke.com.

Endangered Species

This was a really fun and quirky show that aired only briefly on Teletoon in Canada, and handful of other channels, including the CBBC and Cartoon Network international channels.  It still has a cult following, and was nominated for three Canadian Screenwriting Awards in 2016, including Best Animated Program or Series, Best Direction in an Animated Program or Series, and Best Writing in an Animated Program or Series (for an episode called “The Basement” by John Derevlany).

John Derevlany wrote the bible, pilot, and was story editor for most of the 52 episodes.
